From Bristol, Tennessee

  • Stay on I-81 through Bristol; it straddles the Tennessee/Virginia line.
  • About 20 miles past Bristol, you will come to Abingdon, Virginia, and the really pretty part of the drive starts there.
  • There are two exits in Abingdon that say Hwy. 58. The first one says Alt. 58, and you DO NOT want Alt. 58. You want the second Abingdon exit that says U.S. Hwy. 58 east. There will be a Cracker Barrel restaurant on the west side of the Interstate.
  • Set your trip odometer at 0.
  • From the Hwy. 58 exit at I-81, you will take Hwy. 58 east for 33.2 miles. You will pass through Damascus, the Mt. Rogers recreational area and will be following the Holston River, Beaver Dam Creek and the Virginia Creeper Trail. You will cross the Appalachian Trail and the Eastern Continental Divide. Hwy. 58 is twisty and beautiful, so keep your eyes on the road!
  • Shortly after you pass the Mt. Rogers School, you will come to Virginia Road # 751 on your right. There will be a sign that says, "to North Carolina."
  • Take Virginia 751 3.5 miles until it "T's" at U.S. Hwy. 194 in North Carolina. You should be looking at Helton Creek Country Store.
  • Turn left (east) on Hwy. 194 for 1.9 to 2.0 miles. You will come to a sign on Hwy. 194 that says "Silas Creek Road." There will also be a sign that says, "Helton Creek Campground."
  • Turn right, and you are actually on Helton Road. About 50 feet after you turn right, Silas Creek Road goes over a one-lane bridge and up over the mountain to your right. Helton Road continues on to our house.
  • Follow Helton Road for 2.9 miles. There will be about two other roads that branch off of Helton Road. Always bear right, and you will stay on Helton Road.
  • At 2.5 miles, Helton Road T's in to Jim Duvall Road, and you bear right onto Jim Duvall. Follow Jim Duvall Road for .2 miles and Big Helton Road branches off to your left.
  • From the intersection of Jim Duval Road and Big Helton Road you will cross a bridge, see one of our farm fields to your right and then in the curve you will see a road up to the left with a sign for the cabins. Follow the road up to your cabin.

From Boone, North Carolina, approximately 38 miles.
